Yves Henrotin is a Professor at the University of Liege where he teaches general pathology, the techniques particular to physiotherapy and special and professional didactics. He is also director of the Bone and Cartilage Research Unit (BCRU). Finally, he is the head of the Physiotherapy and Functional Readaptation Department at Princess Paola hospital in Marche-en-Famenne.
He has published more than 200 peer-reviewed articles on osteoarthritis and lumbago in scientific journals and has filed 12 patents. He is also the co-editor of a book entitled “Osteoarthritis: clinical and experimental aspects” and has participated in the editing of around ten books on osteoarthritis. He is the honorary editor of the International Journal of Orthopaedics and a member of the editing committee of the journal Osteoarthritis and cartilage. In 2005, he was awarded the Prix De Cooman for his work on the pathogenesis and treatment of osteoarthritis.

Gerard is a fly fisherman, scientist and inventor based in Ireland. Gerard has worked in the life science arena for over twenty five years focussing on biomaterials for skeletal repair. Gerard’s main passion is inspiring technical teams to solve the many difficulties facing clinicians in repairing replacing and augmenting fractured and compromised bone.
With over a dozen biomaterials products commercialised and currently on the market Gerard continues to focus on developing disruptive biomaterials based solutions for unsolved clinical problems. These include the first load bearing biomaterial for hip revision applications BoneSave™, first Calcium Phosphate cement for screw augmentation trauma applications Hydroset™ and the first premixed calcium cement on the market iN3™.
Gerard has worked with Howmedica, Stryker, CelgenTek and PBCBiomed and has co-founded 4 biomaterials companies with over 30 peer reviewed publications presentations and posters and more than a dozen commercialised patents in the field.
He works at University of Surrey, England. Ali Mobasheri is currently Full Professor, Project Leader and Senior Research Scientist in the Department of Regenerative Medicine at the State Research Institute Centre for Innovative Medicine in Vilnius, Lithuania. He successfully co-ordinated the European Commission (EC) Framework 7 (FP7) funded D-BOARD consortium, which focused on the identification, validation and qualification of new biomarkers for degenerative and inflammatory diseases of joints. Ali is also member of the APPROACH Consortium and a member of the Board of Directors of the Osteoarthritis Research Society International (OARSI) He begins his term as President of OARSI in May 2019.
Activating intrinsic cartilage repair to restore joint homeostasis: from bench to bedside
Gerjo van Osch
Gerjo van Osch studied Medical Biology at Utrecht University, the Netherlands and received a PhD from Nijmegen University based on her research on mouse models for osteoarthritis (1994). During her postdoc she became interested in cartilage repair and she continued researching this since. Gerjo is currently appointed as full professor of Connective Tissue Regeneration in the Departments of Orthopaedics and Otorhinolaryngology at Erasmus MC, University Medical Center Rotterdam. She is leading a research group of approx. 15 people. Currently the research mainly focuses on cellular mechanisms of chondrogenesis, the use of stem cells and biomaterials to achieve cartilage repair, and the influence of the inflamed environment in cartilage repair. She is co-author on over 200 publications.
Gerjo is involved in several national and European funded projects (also coordinating two Horizon2020 MSCA-ITNs) and is the chair of TERMIS-EU. She has served on the board of several (inter)national research societies such as the Dutch Society for Matrix Biology and the International Cartilage Repair Society and in editorial boards of scientific journals (a.o. Cartilage, Tissue Engineering, Journal of Tissue Engineering and Regenerative Medicine).

Giorgio Perino, MD
Dr. Giorgio Perino received his medical degree from the University of Bologna, Italy. He completed his residency in anatomic pathology and fellowship in surgical pathology at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York. His training also includes a fellowship in Orthopedic Pathology at the Hospital for Joint Diseases and a fellowship in Soft Tissue Tumor Pathology at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center. He has previously worked as staff pathologist at the Bronx Veteran Administration Hospital.
Dr. Perino is board certified in anatomic pathology. He specializes in the histopathology of clinical and experimental orthopedic pathology. His research activities focus on the histological diagnosis of implant-associated pathologies and in particular adverse local tissue reactions to joint arthroplasty wear material, molecular characterization of synovial inflammatory disorders and animal models for implant infection, intervertebral disc degeneration, placental pathology and osteoarthritis.

Britt Wildemann heads the Experimental Trauma Surgery at the University Hospital Jena since June 2018 and has a further affiliation at the Julius Wolff Institute at the Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin.
She and her teams are investigating the regeneration of the musculoskeletal system with the main focus on tendon pathologies, osseous regeneration and infection prophylaxis and treatment. Using in vitro studies of different cell types and different animal models, they continue to explore various approaches to influence tendon and bone healing and to treat infections.

Bernd Rolauffs is Professor for Tissue Replacement and Chair of the multidisciplinary G.E.R.N Research Center. He obtained his M.D. from the University of Münster, Germany and is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon. His research career includes almost a decade spent in prestigious laboratories in the Depts. of Biochemistry and Orthopaedic Surgery at Rush University Medical Centre in Chicago and the Center for Biomedical Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, as well as a joint replacement fellowship at Harvard Medical School in the Dept. of Orthopaedic Surgery at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Professor Hamish Simpson is Professor of Orthopaedics and Trauma, and Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Edinburgh, specialising in limb reconstruction, musculoskeletal infection and paediatric deformity. He is an elected BOA council member. He has Chaired the Scottish Committee for Orthopaedics and Trauma and was the founding chair of the T+O Scottish Training Improvement Group. He has been President of Combined Services Orthopaedic Society, the British Limb Reconstruction Society, the Association of Professors of Orthopaedic Surgery, and of the British Orthopaedic Research Society.
He runs a musculoskeletal research unit and has a research interest in stem cells for musculoskeletal repair, musculoskeletal infection, novel cutting methodologies and impaired bone healing.
